What They say

During these peculiar and worrying times it is quite apt that we find ourselves drawn towards the more psychedelic side of pop music which injects us with an optimism yet mirrors the weirdness we are all feeling.” - Simon Tucker

Greetings!

I'm a big fan of the White Album so I guess I've always wanted to have a go at making a double album. However, as an artist that has made music for a good few years now, be it in different guises, I only felt ready to begin attempting such a crazy feat during the second half of 2022. I was excited by how trying to write and record this many tracks might affect my creative process. I hoped it would lead to a wider range of material and give me a chance to indulge in more experimentation. After getting more familiar with my new home studio over the course of my two previous EPs, the time felt right. The track order has been chosen as if there are four different 'sides' and if you look at the back cover art, you'll get a sense of this.

My previous three releases have featured a very cohesive and distinctive drum sound. I didn't want to abandon this because I love working with a strong groove. Notwithstanding, I wanted more variation sonically so I decided to write some shorter, more acoustic based songs, either using a drum machine or jettisoning percussion almost completely. I feel like this gives the record more staying power, these quieter numbers becoming the fragile threads that hold the fabric of the LP together.

Making a double album during a time when music consumers are becoming more playlist inclined is questionable - some might assert foolhardy. I felt it apt to reference that internal conflict in 'The Planet Doesn't Have Time For This'!

We artists often feel self-doubt, thinking is this really worth my time and everyone else's? Especially when there are so many options out there for music and the worrying state of the world can make art feel like less of a priority.

We must ride out that self-doubt and carry on trusting our instincts. People need real music more than ever because it provides precious solace and escape. It is important to trust the listeners to have the capacity and concentration to engage and absorb the works the songwriter wishes to create.

Lots of love,

Blokeacola xxx

Blokeacola: A brief History

Welsh-born Blokeacola makes psychedelic indie pop.

His 2020 eponymous debut garnered praise from many quarters and was covered by Louder Than War. Debut single ‘Make It On Your Own’ had already been chosen as a Fresh On The Net ‘Fresh Fave’ and songs from the record, including second single ‘Tsunami’, were continually included on radio shows/podcasts/playlists, notably BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio 6 Music and Amazing Radio, throughout the year.

As befitting the colourful, intriguing music, Blokeacola immediately stood out from the crowd, not just in quirky name alone but also due to a striking persona, in short, the sporting of a bright orange helmet and an apparent penchant for fresh fruit.

2021's decision to pre-release new LP 'Mango Insane' (officially released May 6th, 2022) as individual, standalone singles (available for a limited time only) rapidly brought more triumphs, such as continued BBC and Amazing Radio support (including twice achieving A-list rotation on the latter), constant playlist inclusions from a wide spectrum of curators on multiple platforms, pieces published by TSOFDs, Slacker Shack, London Peaky, and Blokeacola also won Trust the Doc's ‘Track of the Week’ poll on Exile FM for a second time.

Autumn 2022 saw Blokeacola release EP ‘Wig Game’ resulting in more blog/radio/podcast coverage/praise, including ‘Salami Lama’ being voted a ‘Fresh Fave’. This was followed up with the spring release ‘Jupiter Eats Planets’. The title track from the latter was voted a ‘Fresh Fave’ whilst third track ‘Tiny Turtle’ was moved straight onto the A-list playlist by Amazing Radio.

Keen to build on this momentum, Autumn 2023 brings with it Blokeacola’s most ambitious move yet, double album ‘Quasars and Fluff’.

“Dead good.” (Adam Walton, BBC Radio Wales)

‘...a beguiling brand of psychedelic indie pop.’ (Hiapop)

‘Influences of psych Beatles era...’ (Fresh On The Net)

"...superbly psychedelic Welsh artist..."' (Tom Robinson, BBC Radio 6 Music)

...an artist I'm dying to play on the radio...' (Frankie Francis, Amazing Radio)
